Same Day ACH Processing

NACHA’s same-day ACH rule will be incorporated into Operating Circular 4, which governs the Reserve Banks’ ACH services. The new rule requires receiving depository financial institutions (RDFIs) to participate in the service and originating depository financial institutions (ODFIs) to pay a fee to RDFIs for each same-day ACH forward transaction.

  • Virtually all types of ACH payments, including both credits and debits, will be eligible for same-day processing. Only international transactions (IATs) and high-value transactions above $25,000 will not be eligible. Eligible transactions account for approximately 99 percent of current ACH Network volume..
  • The newly adopted rule enables same-day ACH payments (in addition to the existing next-day settlement framework) by making the following operational changes:

    ODFIs (ODFI = Merchant's originating bank) will be able to submit files of same-day ACH payments through two new clearing windows:
    A morning submission deadline at 10:30 AM ET, with settlement occurring at 1:00 PM.
    An afternoon submission deadline at 2:45 PM ET, with settlement occurring at 5:00 PM.
    All RDFIs (RDFI = Consumer's receiving bank) will be required to:
    Receive same-day ACH entries.
    Make funds from same-day ACH credit transactions available to depositors by 5 pm in the RDFI’s local time. Same-Day ACH Time Frames Guardian Analytics
